Prayers and practices for peace

Joining together, uniting in prayer for peace and protection for
Palestine, Israel, Ukraine, Syria, Afghanistan, Yemen, Somalia, and all troubled places on Earth
we bring the greater love to all involved and affected.

‘Nothing can withstand that peace which is awakened in the heart.’

Hazrat Inayat Khan

Invocation

Toward the One,
the Perfection of Love, Harmony, and Beauty,
the Only Being,
United with all the Illuminated Souls,
Who form the Embodiment of the Master,
the Spirit of Guidance.

Prayer for Peace for the World

O Thou the Almighty Sun,
whose Light cleareth away all clouds
We take refuge in Thee, King of all human beings [men],
God of all deities, Lord of all angels.

We pray Thee, dispel the mists of illusion
from the hearts of nations
and lift their lives by Thy All-Sufficient Power.

Pour upon them
Thy limitless love
Thy ever shining light
Thy everlasting life
Thy heavenly joy
And Thy perfect peace.

- Hazrat Inayat Khan -

A Prayer for Peace

Send Thy Peace, O Lord, which is perfect and everlasting,
that our souls may radiate peace.
Send Thy Peace, O Lord, that we may think, act and speak harmoniously.
Send Thy Peace, O Lord, that we may be contented and thankful
for Thy Bountiful Gifts.
Send Thy Peace, O Lord, that amidst our worldly strife we may enjoy Thy Bliss.
Send Thy Peace, O Lord, that we may endure all, tolerate all in the thought
of Thy Grace and Mercy.
Send Thy Peace, O Lord, that our lives may become a divine vision,
and in Thy Light all darkness may vanish.
Send Thy Peace, O Lord, our Father and Mother, that we, Thy Children on earth,
may all unite in one [family].

- Hazrat Inayat Khan -

Peace

Every thing and being on the surface of existence seem separate from one another, but in every plane beneath the surface they approach nearer to each other, and in the innermost plane they all become one. Every disturbance therefore, caused to the peace of the smallest part of existence on the surface, inwardly affects the whole. Thus any thought, speech or action that disturbs peace is wrong, evil, and a sin; if it brings about peace it is right, good, and a virtue. Life being like a dome, its nature is also dome-like. Disturbance of the slightest part of life disturbs the whole and returns as a curse upon the person who caused it; any peace produced on the surface comforts the whole, and thence returns as peace to the producer.

Prayer for World Peace

We affirm that race, religion and nationality
cannot separate our shared beating heart.
We affirm that our heart seeks peace and unity
with the One heart to which we all belong,
and we affirm our solidarity in pursuit of peace.
We affirm that the flow of the same force
that moves the universe,
moves through all our blood and all our hearts,
and we vow to rise
above the distracting illusions of forgetfulness
and live in awareness.

We send a prayer that all beings will come together
in the burgeoning being through which
flows peace, peace, peace throughout the world.

Sutta Nipata

May all beings be filled with joy and peace.
May all beings everywhere,
The strong and the weak,
The great and the small,
The mean and the powerful,
The short and the long,
the subtle and the gross:
May all beings everywhere,
Seen and unseen,
Dwelling far off or nearby,
Being or waiting to become:
May all be filled with lasting joy.
Let no one deceive another,

Let no one anywhere despise another,
Let no one out of anger or resentment
Wish suffering on anyone at all.
Just as a mother with her own life
Protects her child, her only child, from harm,
So within yourself let grow
A boundless love for all creatures.

Let your love flow outward through the universe,
To its height, its depth, its broad extent,
A limitless love, without hatred or enmity.
Then as you stand or walk,
Sit or lie down,
As long as you are awake,
Strive for this with a one-pointed mind;
Your life will bring heaven to earth.

- Buddha’s Discourse on Good Will -

St Francis’ Prayer

Lord, make me an instrument of your Peace
Where there is hatred, let me sow love.
Where there is injury, pardon.
Where there is doubt, faith.
Where there is despair, hope.
Where there is darkness, light.
Where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned
And it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life

Rabbi Nachman’s Prayer for Peace

We affirm that race, religion and nationality
May it be Your will,
Holy One, our God, our ancestors’ God,
that you erase war and bloodshed from the world
and in its place draw down
a great and glorious peace
so that nation shall not lift up sword against nation
neither shall they learn war any more.

Rather, may all the inhabitants of the earth
recognize and deeply know
this great truth:
that we have not come into this world
for strife and division
nor for hatred and rage,
nor provocation and bloodshed.

We have come here only
to encounter You,
eternally blessed One.

And so,
we ask your compassion upon us;
raise up, by us, what is written:

I shall place peace upon the earth
and you shall lie down safe and undisturbed
and I shall banish evil beasts from the earth
and the sword shall not pass through your land.
but let justice come in waves like water
and righteousness flow like a river,
for the earth shall be full
of the knowledge of the Holy One
as the waters cover the sea.

So may it be.
And we say:
Amen.
